Appearance
The Bernese Mountain Dog is a striking tri-colored large dog. The coat is mainly black with striking markings of white and rust.
The males appear masculine as they are usually larger and their heads are squarer shaped, while females are slightly smaller and more
distinctly feminine.
Temperament
The Berner is good-natured, alert, and displays a confidence. They are great with children. They may appear reserved with strangers.
They are an excellent companion dog and are not recommended to be used for security purposes although they will alert their owners to people
or cars approaching their home; but be prepared they would be looking for a good scratch behind the ears rather then defending your home.
Size
Measured at the withers males are 25 to 27-1/2 inches with an average weight of 85-120 pounds, females are 23 to 26 inches and weigh 65-100
pounds.
Coat
The coat is of medium length, thick, but very soft and is slightly wavy or straight and should appear shiny. Yes, they do shed. They are not
the best choice for people with allergies.
Color and Markings
The ground color is jet black. There is a rust coloured spot over each eye, on the each cheek reaching to at least the comer of the mouth,
and on each side of the chest, on all four legs, and under the tail. There is a white blaze and muzzle band. The white markings on the chest
should form a cross. The tip of the tail is white. White on the feet is desired but must not extend higher than the pasterns. Symmetrical
markings are preferable.
Gait
'Flight of foot' can describe our dogs at a full run. They are agile and capable of speed. A slow trot is said to be the working gate
of the Berner.
